Bed Bug Bite Pictures
Bed bugs have had a rather large resurgence in the past few years. There are several speculative reasons for the over 500% increase in bed bug cases in the United States, including different pesticides being used, increased international travel and various household sanitary methods that replaced older one that took care of bed bugs. DDT is what originally wiped out bed bugs in the U.S., and when it was banned in 1972, bed bugs rates started to slowly grow, not hitting a large increase until the recent years when household pesticides were commonly replaced with bait traps.
These may be the culprits of those red marks you wake up with. Bed bugs are a primarily nocturnal insect, feeding mainly at night when you are asleep. Since their bite is painless, their dinner time does not interfere with your slumber. This bed bug bite picture shows the little insect when it's almost done feeding. While bed bugs tend to be a translucent color normally, when they feed they develeop a deep red coloration due to the blood they've injested.
They will appear as either a small red patch or welp, or as a small red bumb. Bed bug bites are caused by the reaction of the persons body to the insects saliva. During the course of a night, a person may be bitten by several bed bugs, leaving large areas covered with bite marks like this.
While bed bugs may bite any area of the body they can, they tend to concentrate their bites on the arms, legs, neck and the lower abdominal/groin area. The size of the bite mark depends on the persons reaction to the bed bug's saliva, as well as what stage of life the bed bug is in. Bed bugs in the adult stage of life tend to take more blood, allowing more time for saliva to interact with the body.
Bed bug bites can start to bleed from the point of entry, where the bed bug broke the skin in order to get bood. Scratching can cause this area to bleed again, even several days after the bite. Bed bug bites can become infected and inflamed easily, especially in areas where they will be rubbing against something very often, like the hands or feet. The rubbing can cause the irritation and potentially break the skin again, and additional bacteria can cause an infection in the wound.
The legs are the most common target. Since the legs are the most covered part of the body when you sleep, the environment is perfect for a bed bug feeding frenzy. New York City and several other large cities have seen drastic spikes in the number of bed bug cases, namely in hotels. Since hotels main guest are travelers, they can carry bed bugs in with their luggage and leave them in a single night without knowing a thing. Once one room has an infestation, they will slowly spread to several other rooms.
While there have been no known cases of bed bugs transmitting infectious disease, they are considered by many scientists to be one of the perfect carriers. If you believe you may have a case of bed bugs, you should contact an exterminator immediately. Cases of bed bugs can get out of control quickly, which makes them harder to get rid of.
